Sertoma Club of Lafayette

Since 1959, the Sertoma Club of Lafayette has been providing service to our community. The name, Sertoma, is an acronym for "SERvice TO MAnkind." The Sertoma Club of Lafayette, Inc., a part of Sertoma International. Sertoma Club of Lafayette was chartered in 1959. Two charter members from the 1959 club, Gordon Keller and Gerald Domingue, still remain active today.

The Sertoma Club has contributed to many projects over the last 40 years. In 1986, the club produced the first Sertoma Cajun Air Festival as a fundraiser to provide the necessary funds to continue doing projects in the community. Our most recent project was to provide the funds to purchase the computer hardware and software for use by the hearing impaired students at Lafayette High School.

The Sertoma Cajun Air Festival is one of the finest air shows in the country and the largest civilian air show along the Gulf Coast. The Festival encompasses all facets of aviation. Everything from aerobatic performances by world class pilots to aerial demonstrations by the finest aviators of the United States Air Force and Navy along with static displays of civilian and military aircraft.

Lafayette Sertoma Sponsors the Autism07 Conference
The Sertoma Club of Lafayette is proud to sponsor an International Conference on the diagnosis, causes, and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders to be held April 12-14 of 2007 with the assistance of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Autism affects ability
to communicate,
to form social relationships, and
to understand what’s going on in the world.

The majority of persons diagnosed will not learn to talk or have social relationships. As one mom said, it was as if someone stole her child's mind and left the body behind. The number of persons diagnosed with autism has increased from less than 1 in 10,000 prior to 1980 to more than 1 in 250 in 2004. The same mom said, if one child in every 250 were kidnapped, it would be a national emergency. Autism has reached epidemic proportions and is a national emergency.

By hosting an international conference here in Lafayette, the Sertoma Club of Lafayette endeavors to enhance public awareness about this baffling disorder. Sertoma is bringing together key researchers and their supporters with a view toward improving the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of autism. In doing so Sertoma is proud to have the support of the Acadian Society for Autistic Citizens.
